Foundation Honors Bruton, Bonsal
The members of the board of trustees of the Moore County Community Foundation ann-ounce their selection of this year's Man and Woman of the Year: Dr. H. David Bruton and Patsy Bonsal.
The two honorees will be feted at a dinner on Thursday evening, Oct. 12, at the Country Club of North Carolina, Pinehurst. The 7 p.m. dinner will be preceded by a cocktail reception at 6 with the presentation following at 8.
Long-time residents of Moore County, Bruton and Bonsal are both outstanding humanitarians and have donated hours of community service.
Following a 30-year pediatrics practice in Southern Pines, Bruton served as chairman of the N.C. Board of Education and as secretary of Health and Human Services. He is the founding chairman of the Moore Free Care Clinic and was instrumental in the formation of the Sandhills Community Care Network.
Bonsal's name is synonymous with two outstanding pursuits: Girl Scouting and Habitat for Humanity.
For more than 40 years she worked with the Girl Scouts at local, state, national and international levels. She held various offices and board positions while traveling the world over on behalf of Girl Scouts International.
"Her involvement with Habitat is legendary," says a spokesman.
Agreeing almost 20 years ago to help raise funds for one house, she has served as board member, vice chairman and fund development chair and seen the building of more than 100 houses in this area.
Fundraising efforts now surpass $300,000 per year. She was awarded the Americus Chair in 2003, which is a lifetime board membership.
Sponsors for the Oct. 12 event are BB&T and Prudential Gouger O'Neal and Saunders Real Estate. For ticket reservations, call Randall Phillips at 295-3598.
The Moore County Community Foundation's services are twofold. It operates an endowment fund that distributes annual grants to local non-profit organizations and it offers investment, management and accounting services that allow individuals to establish funds for particular organizations and causes.
This is the third annual recognition of leading citizens by the foundation.
