Late peach varieties are now ripening in the Sandhills.
"Some of these late peach varieties have firm flesh when ripe, so ask the seller about the variety," says the latest peach report from the Montgomery County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
In addition to peaches, roadside farm markets have an abundant supply of locally grown apples, vegetables and melons.
Peach varieties available this week include September Sun, Fairtime, September Sweet, Last Chance, September Snow (white flesh) and Autumn Prince.
Apple varieties include Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.
