The Pinecrest junior varsity football team scored first, but visiting Terry Sanford struck back early and often.

Seeing action for the first time since defeating Union Pines in its opener, the Patriots fell to the Bulldogs 52-12.

After the Patriots held the Bulldogs to a total of six yards on the first three plays of the game, a fumbled snap on a punt attempt set them up at the visitor's 31 yard line.

On the first play following a procedure penalty, Patriot left tackle Blade Shoop scooped up a teammate's fumble and lumbered 12 yards for a first down.

Five plays later Cutis Lowe went up the middle for a six-yard touchdown. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Led by the passing of freshman quarterback George Vann, the Bulldogs scored 27 unanswered points.

Trailing 27-6, the Patriots' Jamel Verbal broke runs of 30 and 11 yards, taking the ball to the visitor's 11 yard line.

But Verbal left with an injury and was unable to return. After a loss of three yards on the next play, Devon Henson scored from 14 yards out. The conversion was again missed.

Vann threw another touchdown pass and then kicked a 30-yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs a 37-12 lead at halftime.

For the half, Vann completed six of 12 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. By the end, his night also included five extra point kicks and a pass for a two-point conversion.

One of the highlights for Pinecrest was its kick return game. Jyhe Utley returned three kicks for a total of 105 yards and one punt for 27. Henson returned a kick 62 yards.

Union Pines Golf

The Union Pines girls' golf team defeated Southern Lee 183 to 224 at the Country Club of Whispering Pines on Thursday afternoon.

The Viking scores counting toward the team total for the nine-hole match were Amanda D'Ostroph's 41, Laura Kinsman's 43, Katie Roberts' 49 and Samantha Gilder's 50. The other Viking player, Hunter Horne, posted a 53.

Union Pines Volleyball

The Union Pines volleyball team finished in a flourish, scoring 11 of the last 13 points to complete a 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20 sweep of Western Harnett on Thursday.

With Thursday'swin in Lillington, the Vikings move into second place in the Cape Valley Conference and 6-1 overall this season.

Brynn Connor was the serving leader for the Vikings and also contributed 25 assists. Carly Shiflett pitched in with 12 kills and six blocks, Lindsay Wilborn had nine kills and Courtney Sauer had eight.

The Viking jayvee team defeated Western Harnett 25-18 and 25-18.

Pinecrest Tennis

The Pinecrest girls' tennis squad lost a tight 5-4 match to Scotland County on Thursday night.

Picking up wins at the singles position for Pinecrest were Susi Priebe, Lyndsey Anderson and Mary Vess.

The No. 3 doubles team of Morgan Maples/Anderson also won.

O'Neal Cross Country

The O'Neal cross country teams swepta Thursday meet in Greensboro.

Five of the top nine girl harriers were from O'Neal. Blair Puleo took first with a time of 22:34, followed by Faye Turini with a time of 23:14. Also in the top nine were Margaret Cross (24:53, sixth), Marci O'Donnell (25:01, seventh) and Nicole Moser (25:22, ninth).

For the boys, Euge Wold ran a career best time of 19:04 and took first. Walker Parrish (19:17) and Coby Chavis (19:31) immediately followed their teammate.
