Wacker Soars at Seahawk

Whether he's running at 8:30 at night or 8:30 in the morning, Pinecrest's Andy Wacker leads the field.

The Patriot senior set a meet record in the recent Jungle Run under the lights at South View High School.

Last Saturday morning he set a personal best time of 15:21 in winning the Seahawk Invitational cross country race at UNC-Wilmington.

He finished 22 seconds in front of Sam Mordecai of Broughton.

The Patriot boys finished second in the elite field behind Broughton, while the Patriot girls came in third behind first-place Providence and second-place Green Hope.

The other Patriot boys figuring in the team total were Brett Baggett, 11th (16:40), Mark Moon, 23rd (17:04), Andrew Garrison, 33rd (17:17), and Blake Smith, 39th (17:25).

Also running for the Patriots in the field of 154 were Billy Gehrung, 46th (17:30), and Bryce Pittard, 96th (18:29)

Seven of the 10 top-ranked 4-A boys' teams in the state (North Carolina Cross Country Coaches poll) competed in the meet. The 10th-ranked Patriot boys finished in front of five of the six teams ranked ahead of them.

The top-five Patriot girls were Amanda McKinney, ninth (19:55), Lexie Schustrom, 17th (20:23), Stephanie Shannon, 19th (20:27), Lauren Bishop, 31st (20:45), and Caitlin McArdle, 33rd (20:48).

Completing the Patriot contingent, Rebecca Dupre was 54th (21:24) and Rachel Dokich was 81st (22:04) in a field of 161 contestants.

Pinecrest was scheduled to hold a home Mid-Southeastern Conference meet on Tuesday.
