The opening day for the Sandhills Optimist youth football leagues is set for Saturday at John Williams Stadium on the campus of Pinecrest High School.

The day's activities include six flag football games, featuring players between the ages of 6 and 8. Those games begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the morning.

At noon, the official Opening Day Ceremony for the leagues will be held, with four teams (ages 10-12) playing tackle football squaring off. The first game begins at 1 p.m., while the second game takes place at 3 p.m.

There is no admission fee.

The leagues were started last year by the Sandhills Optimist Club in an effort to give local youths the opportunity to learn football fundamentals at an early age.
