'Night of Fire': Rockingham Hosts UTI World Finals

Rockingham Dragway will be the site of the Universal Technical Institute World Finals this morning through Sunday.

The event features the JCB "Night of Fire" show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, that is the final round of professional qualifying under the lights. It includes two flame-burning Nitro-fueled classes -- the ground pounding "Super Shock-wave" Jet Truck and the 100-miles-per-hour JCB GT Backhoe Loader.

The International Hot Rod Assocation will crown five professional world champions. At stake will be $150,000 for the Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Car points leaders, $50,000 to Pro Modified and $35,000 to Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Stock.

Many world champions will be competing in the event that begins with sportsman qualifying this morning at 9 a.m. The gates open daily at 8 a.m.

Tickets include free parking and access to the pit area. Spectators are permitted to go "backstage" and watch the drivers tune their vehicles for the next round, get photographs and team merchandise.

The adult general admission price is $35 on Friday, $40 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday. The junior ticket (ages 6-12) is $5. An adult 3-day pass can be obtained for $85.

Schedule - Friday Sportsman qualifying at 9 a.m., Professional qualifying (Q-1) at 6 p.m.; Saturday Sportsman eliminations at 9 a.m., Professional qualifying (Q-2) at 2 p.m., JCB "Night of Fire" professional qualifying (Q-3) at 6 p.m.; Sunday Sportsman eliminations at 10 a.m., Professional eliminations at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., Final Round 4:15 p.m.
