DonorsChoose, a nonprofit organization that uses the Internet to connect citizen donors with teachers in need, has funneled a total of $1,000,000 in donors' funds to North Carolina public school projects for the past two years.

Monetary gifts that are received through www.donorschoose.org are earmarked for supplies and experiences students need to be successful in school.

It goes for everything from textbooks and maps to theater stages and playground equipment.

The organization, which launched its program in North Carolina two years ago, hopes to raise another $50,000 over the next month through its "Back to School Challenge," to benefit projects currently posted in North Carolina.

"We're thrilled about the success DonorsChoose has had in North Carolina," said Katie Bisbee, DonorsChoose executive director of the Carolinas. "Reaching $1,000,000 in donations is a great achievement -- but there are still hundreds of teacher requests that are yet to be filled.

"We will continue our efforts to encourage donor participation, to supply North Carolina public school teachers with the tools their students need to start the school year right."

DonorsChoose is a simple way to fulfill needs and foster innovation in public schools. At DonorsChoose.org, teachers submit ideas for experiences and materials that their students need to learn, such as "Launch a Love of Reading" ($250) to "Don't Let Genetics Concepts (Fruit) Fly By" ($428) to "Balance my Checkbook" ($620).
