The Union Pines volleyball team breezed past Western Harnett in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference tournament Thursday.
The Vikings swept Western Harnett 25-8, 25-21 and 25-14.
Brynn Connor led the way with 14 service points. Brianne Hendricks contributed eight digs, Carly Shiflett added 13 kills and K.K. Deardorff tallied four blocks.
They move on to play the winner of Gray's Creek/Overhills on Tuesday.
O'Neal Volleyball
O'Neal traveled to American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro on Thursday and picked up a 3-0 win.
The Falcons swept American Hebrew 25-9, 25-22 and 25-8. The Falcons move to 10-5, 9-4 in the conference, with the win. Their next match will be at home against Calvary Baptist School on Tuesday.
Melody Miller led the team with 17 service points and five aces. Jackie Woodyear added 12 service points and five kills. Leah Kelly also contributed four kills.
Pinecrest tennis
Pinecrest ended the Mid-Southeastern Conference tournament with the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles spots and the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spot represented.
In Thursday's action, Susi Prebe lost to Scotland's Jessica Cook. Prebe took third in the conference. Tonya Bator lost to Jack Britt's Varice Love to finish fourth in the conference. Hailey Cioccolanti beat Scotland's Liza Purcell to take fifth place in the conference.
In doubles, the team of Morgan Maples/Lyndsey Anderson beat Scotland's Minnick/Garrison before losing to Scotland's Brigman/Bode team. Maples/Anderson finished second in the conference, followed closely in third by teammates Kristin Anderson/Mary Vess.
All of the players advance to the regional tournament, to be played next Friday and Saturday. The dual team tournament begins Tuesday.
Times and locations of those matches to be announced.
O'Neal Cross Country
The O'Neal boys' and girls' cross country teams pulled off a sweep in a six-team meet held Thursday at Gibson Park in High Point.
Paced by Walker Parrish and Pat Noelke (with times of 19:32 and 19:42, respectively), the boys collected 45 points to outdistance runner-up Calvary Baptist.
Led by Faye Turini and Blair Puleo (with times of 22:24 and 22:32, respectively), the girls finished first with 40 points, ahead of High Point Christian with 62 points.
Other Falcon boys in the race were Coby Chavis (10th, 20:32), Gray Hodson (13th), Euge Wold (19th), Austin Puleo (24th), Christopher Waddell (35th), Evan Davies (43rd) and Kurt Hillburger (56th).
Other Falcon girls in the race were Marci O'Donnell (11th), Nicole Moser (12th), Allie Strunk (14th), Jenna Woronoff (16th) and Brittana Thompson (20th).
Pinecrest JV Football
The Pinecrest jayvee football team fought valiantly at home against Jack Britt on Thursday but ending up losing the contest, 13-8.
Pinecrest's first drive of the second half accounted for the team's only score, to which they added a two-point conversion.
Jack Britt scored both of their touchdowns in the first half.
The game was marred by an injury to a Pinecrest player, who had to be transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital by EMS. Play was delayed about 20-25 minutes.
County officials said a report of a "man down" came in from Pinecrest about 8:35 p.m.
School officials said the player suffered a neck strain and would return to practice Monday.
Union Pines JV Football
The Union Pines jayvee football squad dropped its Thursday match with Harnett Central 26-18.
The Vikings are now 4-3 on the season.
