Jack Britt (2003), Pinecrest (2004) and Scotland (2005) have taken turns winning Mid-Southeastern Conference volleyball titles over the last few years. Now it appears that this year, it might be Jack Britt's turn again.
The Buccaneers remained unbeaten in the Mid-Southeastern Conference (11-0) by sweeping the PInecrest 25-19, 27-25 and 25-21 at James Moore Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
The loss dropped the record of the third-place Patriots to 7-4 in the conference and 11-7 overall.
"It looked like Jack Britt was more excited about playing than we were," Patriot coach Barbara Foxx said. "We just weren't up for this game. I don't know why."
After succumbing to a nine-point service run by the Bucs' Cassy Piela in the first game, the Patriots had a golden opportunity to change the momentum of the match in the second one.
Trailing 15-13, the Pats' Tytiana Suvorova had a couple of wins at the net with Abbie Ovbey serving, helping turn the deficit into a 17-15 lead. They appeared to have the game in control after three serves in a row by Jenna Morrell, coupled with two more kills by Suvorova, gave them a 23-19 lead. But the Bucs rallied for the next five points and went on to win it 27-25.
"She gets her hands out on defense, and she anticipates the location of the ball real well," Foxx said of Suvorova, an exchange student from Germany. "She does a good job at the net and she hits the ball where they're not. She hits smart."
The home team led 12-6 in the third game as Morgan Ridge served for four points and Morrell picked up a couple of kills. Piela, who served for 20 points in the match, served for the next nine, almost assuring the sweep by the Bucs.
Each time the Patriot showed signs of a comeback, the Bucs seemed to have an answer.
"When things got close, we made mistakes," Foxx said. "We made mistakes like being in the wrong place at the wrong time -- standing up straight when we should have been in the low zone to make a good pass."
Ovbey led the Patriots in kills with 11 and service points with six. Suvorova had seven kills and Morrell contributed six.
The Patriot jayvee team improved to 10-1 in conference play with a 25-18, 25-22 victory over Jack Britt.
