You guys are good.
In this week's The Pilot football contest, two players aced the weekly quiz, while a whole lot of people came in with 19-1 marks. That's a lot better than what I did, but did you expect anything more (or less, considering how you want to look at it) from me?
Anyway, let's get to those perfect scores. They belong to David McKinnon Jr. of Carthage and Johnny Robbins of Carthage. Yes, those two both went 20-0. But then there were six participants that went 19-1, including Joan Mangrum of Pinebluff, Meagan Rock of Aberdeen, Amanda Latham of Vass, Shirley Morgan of Pinehurst, Chuck Latham of Vass and Dick Maag of Pinehurst.
So to the tiebreaker we shall go. The tiebreaker game was Texas vs. Oklahoma, a game that the Longhorns won by a 28-10 score for a total of 38 points. That means that Mr. McKinnon gets the $50 first-place check based on his total of 45 points, while Mr. Robbins gets the $30 second-place check because he had 49 as his tiebreaker number.
As for the 19-1 folks, Mangrum gets the $20 third-place check based on her total tiebreaker number of 42.
Now, there were also seven people that went 18-2, including Kathy Latham of Vass, Shaun Ingram of West End, Michael Hines of Vass, Karen Grausso of Pinehurst, Velma Davis of Carthage, Mike Bowyer of Pinebluff and Michael Ed Brown of Robbins.
Another 10 prognosticators went 17-3. But space is limiting my chance to put more names in here, so I'll just tell you that you guys are good, and me, I'm not so good. In fact, I don't fell well after going a sparkling 13-7 to bring my overall mark to 61-39.
There has been a shakeup at the top of the rankings.
Dale Kellis, who has been leading the last two weeks, fell off a bit this week, dropping into a tie for fourth in the season-long race.
The new leader is Mike Bowyer of Pinebluff with a record of 74-26. For the rest of the standings you have to wait until after I make my picks for next week.
And my picks are: Detroit, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans, Seattle, Washington, Pittsburgh, San Diego, N.Y. Jets, Chicago, Denver, Ohio State, Michigan, Wake Forest, Rutgers, ECU, South Florida, Auburn.
Overall Standings
74-26 -- Mike Bowyer of Pinebluff
73-27 -- David Hale of Seven Lakes, Barry Miller of Pinebluff, John Robbins of Carthage, Mike Weaver of Southern Pines
72-28 -- Chase Blake of Southern Pines
71-29 -- Michael Ed Brown of Robbins, Dale Kellis of Candor, Will Lassiter of Pinehurst, Amanda Latham of Vass, Dick Maag of Pinehurst, Paul Tilton of Whispering Pines
