The North Moore boys' soccer team put together its third outstanding defensive effort in a row in a 3-0 home victory over South Davidson Wednesday evening.
The Mustangs defeated Chatham Central 11-0 on Monday.
Carlos Avila manufactured a hat trick in each of the matches. Against South Davidson, his goals came in the 12th and 19th and 67th minutes. Edwin De La Cruz, Diego Garcia and Raul Chavez had the assists.
Mustang coach Michael Shamberger was pleased with his team's effort against a much-improved South Davidson squad.
"They gave us a good game, but we continue to get better as a team," the coach said. "I like the fact that we seem to be peaking at the end of the season."
Shamberger points to the work of defenders Omar Gonzalez, Joaquin Diaz, Ozzie Castillo, Manny Mendoza, Rogelio Catalan and Antonio Bernal as part of the reason. Bernardo Cruz and Eric Diaz split the goalkeeping in the team's fourth shutout win of the season.
Another thing the coach liked about Wednesday's performance was the composure displayed by his players.
"We weren't emotionally high for this game," he said, "so there was the risk of slipping up. From the 25-minute mark of the second half down to the time we scored our third goal, South Davidson was coming at us hard, trying to get back in the game. We weathered the storm nicely and didn't panic, and took our opportunities when we had them. The guys stayed calm and worked together well."
In addition to the three goals by Avila in Monday's rout, Chavez, Misael Gutierrez, Cruz, Garcia, Gonzalez, Castillo, Mendoza and Jonni Lopez found the net. Contributing assists were Diaz, Gonzalez, Cruz, Chavez, Bernal and Catalan. Lopez and Avila shared the goalkeeping.
With the two wins, the Mustangs improved to 5-2 in the Yadkin Valley Conference and 8-4 overall. East Montgomery continues to be unbeaten in the conference after handing Jordan-Matthews its second league loss on Wednesday.
