The Pinecrest boys' cross country team nipped Mooresville by one point for the team title at the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational held at Hagan Stone Park on Saturday.

In an event that included six high school and two college races, the Patriots' Andy Wacker won the championship level high school competition in a time of 15:37.

The rest of the first five finishers for the Patriots were Brett Baggett, seventh (16:41), Andrew Garrison, 17th (16:58), Mark Moon, 21st (17:01), and Billy Gehrung, 57th (17:37).

Led by a sixth-place performance of 19:40 by Amanda McKinney, the Pinecrest girls were third behind Science Hill and East Chapel Hill. Also figuring in the Patriot point total in the 5K race were Stephanie Shannon, 21st (20:35), Lauren Bishop, 30th (20:46), Lexie Schustrom, 46th (21:11), and Rebecca Dupre, 52nd (21:20).

The Union Pines boys finished sixth out of 27 teams in the Boys' Invitational competition with Blake Boyd coming in third individually with a time of 16:38.

The Viking senior was followed in by teammates Ryan Heib, 30th (17:51), Ian Estep, 47th (18:16), Shawn Berry, 59th (18:42), and Curtis Frye, 74th (19:05).

The Vikings' top finisher in the Girls' Invitational was Victoria Glenn in 41st place with a time of 21:60.

Pinecrest also had a couple of top-10 performances in the Boys' Developmental race. Scott Whitecar was fifth (17:53) and Craig Baggett was eighth (17:55).

The Patriots continue on the Saturday circuit when they travel to Charlotte on Saturday for the Wendy's Invitational at McAlpine Park.

This afternoon Union Pines entertains Triton in a Cape Fear Valley Conference meet, beginning at 5 p.m.
