Football Contest: Pinebluff Resident Breaks Tie

Well, the good news from my point of view is that I actually had a decent week. After three weeks of mediocrity, I finally had my breakout week.

More on that later, as I'm sure my faithful readers really don't care how I did, but want to know who won the money.

It was a really good week for Mike Bowyer of Pinebluff, Tim Cameron of Carthage and Steve Lassiter of Pinehurst. They all went 17-3 for the week. So let's go to the tiebreaker, which just so happened to be the Georgia Tech versus Va. Tech game. I will say this -- not many people picked Georgia Tech to travel to Blacksburg and handle the Hokies with ease. But they did, with the boys from Georgia beating the boys from Virginia by a 38-27 score. That means 65 points were scored in the game. And that means that Bowyer gets the $50 first-place check based on his tiebreaker total of 38.

Then comes Mr. Cameron, who had 33 points for his tiebreaker, and now has a check for $30 for finishing second. Of course, that leaves Lassiter, who gets the $20 third-place check based on his tiebreaker total of 30.

Obviously, not many people thought a lot of points were going to be scored in the game.

Now, nine people came in with 16-4 records. They were Holly Hill of Pinehurst; Harold Harkess of Aberdeen; Dorothy Maag of Pinehurst; Willie Nicholson of Red Springs; Brad Robbins of Whispering Pines; Brian Rock of Aberdeen; Dorothy Rock of Southern Pines; Paul Tilton of Whispering Pines; and Mike Weaver of Southern Pines.

Now, I'll tell you that I also went 16-4, and now sit at 48-32 in the overall race. That is no where near the mark that Dale Kellis of Candor has established in the early going of the season-long contest. He keeps the top spot with a 60-20 record, but David Hale of Seven Lakes is closing in on him. Hale is 59-21. Last week, two games separated Kellis and Hale.

For a more complete list of leaders, look to the end of this column.

But first I have to make my weekly journey into guessing the winners. They will be: Chicago, Carolina, Minnesota, New England, Green Bay, New Orleans, Indy, Washington, Arizona, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Denver, LSU, Georgia, ECU, Miami, California, Texas.
