A Need for Respect

In reference to Katherine Evans' piece, "Holocaust Survivor Shares Story With Students" (Nov. 24): We hope that first and foremost the readership enjoys and appreciates the wonderful talent of this gifted writer. We are lucky to have her. She brings a bright light and a renewed eagerness to our enjoyment of The Pilot.

We could not help wondering, as we read her description of the students, "... many of them slouched down into their hooded sweatshirts ...," whether they have a sense of the times in which we live.

Someone said, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." At such a school assembly when we were growing up, a teacher would have instructed those students to sit up straight and pay attention.

It was encouraging to learn that the students did have to sign a behavior contract and write an essay explaining why they wanted to hear the speaker. We can only imagine the behavior had they not fulfilled these requirements.
