Viking Grapplers Get Four Wins in County Duals

The Union Pines wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack in the 10-team Moore County Duals that concluded on Saturday at Union Pines.

Viking heavyweight Dan King excelled individually, winning all nine of his bouts to improve to 19-0 on the season. Teammates Tony Fernandez (135 pounds) and Joey Beck (160) both went 8-1, each losing to a wrestler from Riverside. James Smearman (103) was 6-3 while Doug Roach (140) went 5-4.

Riverside won the team title with a 9-0 mark followed by Jack Britt 8-1, Leesville Road 5-4, Union Pines, East Gaston and Hopewell 4-5, Hoke 2-7, Lee County 1-8, and Southern Alamance 0-9 (by forfeit). Riverside, Jack Britt, East Gaston and Leesville Road all finished in the top 10 in last season's 4-A state championships.

In Saturday's matches, the Vikings lost to Jack Britt 59-15, East Gaston 48-36 and Anson 42-35. They defeated Hoke 54-28 and gained a forfeit win over Southern Alamance. In Friday's matches, the Vikings defeated Lee County 48-28 and Hopewell 46-36, while losing to Riverside 65-12 and Leesville Road 35-31.

Union Pines is scheduled to compete in the Riverside Duals in Durham on Wednesday.
