A lull in The Pilot Cup tournament allowed the North Moore High School basketball squads to slip out of county mode and pick up two wins in Robbins Monday.
After starting the season with losses by the boys' and girls' teams in Saturday's opening round of The Pilot Cup, the Mustangs broke out against visiting Faith Christian, with both teams grabbing wins. The boys won 73-54, while the girls picked up a 60-40 win.
Both teams were 1-1 entering Tuesday's consolation games in The Pilot Cup held at Pinecrest High School.
The Mustang boys had three players in double figures in Monday's win, led by Rashaad Brower's 16 points.
Jerome Maness added 14 and Ryan Chisholm 11 for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs led in the contest from start to finish, employing a tight man-to-man press for most of the first quarter, and taking advantage of a number of Eagle turnovers to lead at the end of the first period by a score of 24-9.
Faith Christian played even with the Mustangs in the second quarter, and narrowed the gap to 11 points at halftime, 41-30.
Led by the outside shooting of Chisholm, who finished with three treys, and the inside play of Brower, Terese Barrett and Maness, the Mustangs increased their lead to 19 points at the end of the third period, 61-42, and maintained that margin through the fourth quarter, winning by a score of 73-54.
The girls' game went much the same as the boys' encounter, with the Mustangs once again placing three players in double figures. Leading the way was Brittany Harper with 11, while Brandi Chandler and Logan Monroe contributed 10 points each.
The Mustangs took control of the game right from the start, employing a full-court man-to-man press, and led at the end of the first quarter by a score of 21-10.
The Eagles played even with North Moore in the second quarter, however, and narrowed the gap to nine points at the intermission, 31-22.
North Moore continued the defensive pressure in the third quarter, and took advantage of a number of Eagle turnovers to increase their lead to 18 points.
Led by Lindsay Lowe and Shelly Lowe, the Eagles held their own in the fourth quarter, but were unable to narrow the gap, as North Moore prevailed 60-40.
Lindsay and Shelly Lowe each had 11 points for the Eagles.
