No matter how his team fares in this year's Moore County Duals, Friday will have a special meaning for Union Pines wrestling coach Matt Ragsdale.
About 1 a.m. Friday, his wife, Liz, delivered their second daughter, Madelyn Grace. The sister of two-year old Anna Marie weighs six pounds, 12 ounces.
"It was a long night," the coach said of the wait for the baby's arrival, "but I'm sure it was longer for Liz. Everybody's doing fine and the wrestlers wrestled well today. It's been a lot of fun. It's been a great day."
The Vikings went 2-2 in Friday's session of the event they are hosting. They defeated Lee County (48-28) and Hopewell (46-36), while losing to Riverside (65-12) and Leesville Road (35-31). The final five duals in the 10-team event will take place Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Ragsdale traveled back and forth from First Health to Union Pines several times, catching portions of Friday's action. He arrived shortly after the start of the close match against Leesville Road, but just in time to help win a reversal of a decision made against Aaron Breasseale in the 145-pound bout.
Breasseale was winning 16-7 on points as time expired in the third period. But the referee initially ruled that the junior committed a fourth technical violation just before it ended, and raised the hand of the Leesville wrestler as the winner.
Rasgdale appealed, and the scorer's table supported his claim that the foul occurred after time expired, giving the nod to the Viking wrestler.
Joey Beck (160) and Durrell Pate (189) picked up first-minute pins in two of the last four bouts, but the Vikings still fell four points short.
Viking heavyweight Dan King remained undefeated after winning two bouts by forfeit and two with quick pins. Tony Fernandez (135) went 3-1 for the evening, including the Vikings only win against 4-A power Riverside on a first period pin. James Smearman (103) also went 3-1 for the Vikes.
