A fatal accident in Richmond County Thursday caused traffic to back up into Moore County.

According to the State Highway Patrol, a Rockingham woman died in the wreck, which involved four vehicles.

The accident occurred about 5:02 p.m. on U.S. 1 about a mile north of Hoffman.

Doris Crist Green, 73, was traveling south -- toward Hoffman -- crossed the center line and collided head-on with a vehicle coming the other direction. She died.

Two other vehicles, one traveling north and one going south, attempted to avoid the wreck by driving on to the shoulder and collided.

There were several people injured in the wreck, but Green was the only person killed, according to the Highway Patrol. No further information on the accident was available because office was closed Friday for Veteran's Day.

While traffic was backed up, a black man dressed in a white T-shirt approached a vehicle armed with a handgun and attempted to rob the driver, according to Richmond County Sheriff's Captain J.D. Stoner.

The driver drove off leaving the attempted robber standing in the roadway.
