The Union Pines football team ran its way to a convincing fourth win of the season Friday, making itself playoff eligible for the 3-A state playoffs.

But, according to playoff brackets released Saturday afternoon, it was not enough.

The Vikings end the year at 4-7.

Gallimore carried the ball 37 timesfor 268 yards, scoring five touchdowns, behinda big surge from his offensive line.The junioralso scored five touchdowns in the 47-27 victory at Western Harnett.

Gallimore scored twice before the Eagles even ran a play from scrimmage, thanks in part to a fumble recovery by the Vikings' Daniel Duerner on a kickoff return. When he scored for the third time early in the second quarter, the Vikings had run 25 plays from scrimmage to just three for the home team.

Following a Western Harnett touchdown, the Vikings answered quickly with quarterback TravisMonroe connecting with Cole Butler on a 25-yard scoring play, making it 27-7 at halftime.

The visitors showed signs of life when Bud Loomisturned aViking fumble into a 64-yard yard touchdown play early in the third period, cutting the lead to 27-14. But again the Vikings answered quickly, with Galllimore, taking it in from the two this time.

Midway through the final period, the Eagles drew to within 13 points again behind the passing and running of quarterback Zack Meert. The Vikings took over at their own 36 after the ensuing kickoff. Gallimore ate up all of the yards on a six-play 64-yard scoring drive that settled the issue for good.

The Vikings gained more than 400 yards on the ground in an impressive show of ball control. Monroe picked up 60 of the yards on nine carries.

Pinecrest Football

The Pinecrest football team was defeated 35-12 by Douglas Byrd in Fayetteville on Friday night.

The Patriots completed the season with a record of 0-11 while Byrd wound up at 3-8.

Cross country - Pinecrest at 4-A state championships -boys' race, 10:30 a.m., girls' 11:30 a.m.; Union Pines at 3-A state championships - boys' 10 a.m., girls' 11 a.m.; North Moore at 1-A state championships- boys' 2 p.m., girls 3 p.m.; Races for all classifications held at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.

Boys' soccer - Wilmington Hoggard ar Pinecrest, 6:30 p.m.; Williams at Union Pines, 7 p.m.

Girls' Tennis -- Union Pines vs. Hickory, state championship, Burlington Tennis Center
