University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Alicia Joi Jones, a rising senior at UNC--Chapel Hill was recently awarded the prestigious Wanda Chappell Scholarship to complete her studies at the university.
Jones was chosen for this award on the basis of her outstanding academic achievement as well as her overall potential for sucess in her field of study.
She will complete a double major in communications and public relations and a minor in creative writing.
Jones is the daughter of Kathy and the late Robert W. Jones, and the granddaughter of Geneva Winfield of Southern Pines.
After graduating in May 2007, she will continue her studies in Atlanta Georgia.
The Chappell scholarship was established in 1999 in honor of Wanda Chappell who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the university, received her law degree, and at the time of her death she was the senior vice president and deputy publisher at Random House Inc. in New York.

Richmond Community College
Richmond Community College graduated four Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) major. They are Lisha Steed of Aberdeen, Kevin Overton of West End, Katherine Marsh of Southern Pines, and Angela Hollmond of Hoffman.
Steed received the Pediatric Award presented by Janet J. Petris in honor of Dr. William D. James for maintaining and demonstrating a superior ability in nursing of children.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a graduate of North Moore High School.

Thomas Smith also earned a Leadership Achievement Award. He is the son of Steve and Sue Smith.
