The exhibit, which is located at The Katharine L. Boyd Library at Sandhills Community College, begins in 1928 with the opening of the Pine Needles Inn and Golf Course and follows the history of the building over the past 78 years.

"In addition to the Pine Needles Inn, The Overlook at Pine Knoll has an interesting history," says John Capasso, president and CEO of St. Joseph of the Pines. "It was also used as an Army Air Force Technical Training Command Center during World War II before becoming the St. Joseph's Hospital in 1948. Twenty years later, in 1968, the St. Joseph Hospital changed to a skilled-nursing facility, providing long-term care for seniors in our community. Most recently, the building was used as offices for St. Joseph of the Pines. Now, in 2006, this historic building will become The Overlook at Pine Knoll, providing independent senior living to the community."

Items exhibited in the display include photographs, original silver serving pieces and a boiler water pressure gauge from the Pine Needles Inn, newspaper articles, and books about the area and the time period.

The evolution of St. Joseph of the Pines Health System is also included in the exhibit with information about The Villas at Pine Knoll, The St. Joseph Health Center, Providence Places I-V and Belle Meade Resort Retirement on display.

Dr. John Stacey, director of Learning Resources with Sandhills Community College is thrilled to have the display housed in the Hastings Art Gallery at the college.

"Since moving to Moore County a little over a year ago, I am constantly reminded that there is such a strong sense of support within this community for improving quality of life and education for all," says Stacey. "We have so many wonderful resources in this area, and I am honored to be working with St. Joseph of the Pines on such a historically prominent landmark. Many people made this collaboration possible, and I want to especially thank Audrey Moriarity from Givens Memorial Library, Tufts Archives, for their generous contributions to the exhibit. Also, thanks to Cliff Stuckey, chairman of Sandhills College Department of Fine Arts for his support with this project."

The exhibit, which is located at The Katharine L. Boyd Library at Sandhills Community College, runs through Aug. 11, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 910-246-1008.
