Airport Name Change Opens Possibilities

I was not surprised to learn that certain community and airport leaders now want to include Pinehurst in the name of our airport that is situated in Southern Pines and Whispering Pines. Will the airport be the next annexation by Pinehurst? How does one fit this into the historic district?

In my humble opinion, it should be named the John Edwards International Airport to honor our local son from Robbins, who also served the residents of Moore County on a very limited basis.

However, I have just learned that New Hampshire is considering naming the Manchester, N.H., airport after Edwards, based upon the amount of time and money he has spent in the Granite State over the past six years.

If memory serves me well, wasn't it the Pinehurst leadership that was so litigious for several years when anyone tried to use the generic name "Pinehurst"?

Wouldn't the airport officials be much wiser to name it after a community nearer the airport that has international name recognition? My vote goes for the name, "The Niagara International Airport."

In view of the fact that the equestrian world in the Sandhills is just as large an economic factor as golf, the better name would be the Southern Pines Equestrian Airport. Stop horsing around with our Moore County Airport.
