Sophomore Jarrin Wooten scored seven of his team-high 17 points in the lastfour minutes, helping Pinecrest slip by Richmond County 62-59 in Rockingham on Tuesday evening.
In a fourth quarter that saw three ties and two lead changes, Adam Wire fed Wooten for the basket that put the Patriots in front for good at 60-58 with 1:42 left in the game.
After the Raiders drew within one on a free throw, the Patriots got a big defensive play from freshman Cedric Threadgill.Afterblockinga Raider shot along the left baseline, teammate James Breeden collected the ball and fired it ahead to Josh Scales for the layup that provided the final points of the game.
The Raiders' Harold Sellers missed an attempt at a tying three as time ran out.
"We had to execute down the stretch," Wooten said afterward. "We were able to do a lot of things we practice."
The win evens Pinecrest's record at 1-1 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and raises its overall record to 5-4. The Patriots entertain Hoke County at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Richmond drops to 0-2 and 2-3.
Union Pines Boys' Basketball
The Union Pines boys fell to 4-4 (1-1 in Cape Fear Valley Conference play) after a tough 63-48 loss at home against Southern Lee.
The 63 points was Southern lee's lowest output of the season.
Jonathon Toomer led the Vikings with 16 points and seven rebounds. Bryan Collins added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern Lee went on a 10-2 run before half time that gave them a one-point lead at 25-24. They went on an 18-point run to end the game.
Pinecrest Girls' Basketball
The Pinecrest girls' basketball team will take a 2-0 conference mark into Friday night's 6 p.m. home game against Hoke County.
The Patriots, 5-4 overall, put themselves in that position with a 56-45 victory at Richmond County on Tuesday evening. Three Pats scored in double figures led by guards Leondra Smith and Latanya Cain with 15 points each.
Forward Brittany Williams added 11 points.
Cain scored 13 points ina first half that had the Raiders leading much of the way.Teammate Hanna Humphrey scored the basket that started an 8-2 run which put the Patriots in front 30-25 at halftime.
"It seems we come out slow a lot of times," said Humphrey one of the Patriot tri-captains. "We just need to get in our rhythm as a team. Once we get our rhythm, stuff starts to happen because every player on this team as something to give. You can see that when we begin playing together as a team."
Union Pines Wrestling
The Union Pines wrestling team lost 38-35 at Gray's Creek on Tuesday on a pin in the last bout of the evening.
The Vikings made a strong comeback to take a 35-32 lead before the disappointing ending.
The loss drops the Vikings' record in the Cape Fear Valley Conference to 1-1. They are scheduled to compete in Saturday's Sweet XVI Tournament at Pinecrest.
Pinecrest JV Basketball
The Lady Patriots lost their first game of the year, 34-32, at home to Richmond on Tuesday. Pinecrest fell to 1-1 in the conference, 6-1 overall.
The Pinecrest boys pulled away in the second half to beat the Raiders 58-47. The Patriots are 2-0 in the conference, 7-0 overall.
