Two local golfers had terrific showings in the George Holliday Memorial Junior Golf Tournament held in Myrtle Beach Nov. 23-25.
Darlea Carr of Pinehurst shot a 54-hole total of 234 to tie for second place in the Girls' 15 Age Division played on three courses at Myrtle Beach National. Carr tied for fourth in the overall 12-18 Division. She had rounds of 73-81-80 and finished 10 strokes behind overall winner Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn.
Kevin MacDonald of Pinebluff shot 73-75-75 -- 223 to take fifth place in the Boys' Age 17 division and tied for seventh overall. Taylor Zimmerman of State Road won the title with a 54-hole score of 212 in the event, which is sanctioned by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association.

Forest Creek: Both the North and South Courses at Forest Creek Golf Club have been ranked within the 30 Best Residential Golf Courses in America, according to Golfweek Magazine, making Forest Creek the highest ranked 36-hole facility in the nation.
The rankings of America's 100 best residential courses were published in a special November magazine supplement to the popular national golf news weekly. The results came directly from overall voting by a nationwide panel of golf enthusiasts that also selects America's top 100 classic (built 1960 and earlier) and modern (built 1961-present) courses, as well as the top 50 new courses annually.
Panelists grade candidate courses in 10 separate voting categories before assigning an overall grade.
Forest Creek's newer North Course, opened just last year, made its debut in the residential rankings at No. 15, the second highest ranking of 12 newcomers to the top 100. The original South Course, a perennial fixture on the magazine's top 100 residential course poll since it opened in 1996, ranked 29th.
Both Forest Creek courses are designed by Tom Fazio, who led all architects with 24 courses among the top 100. Jack Nicklaus placed 19 courses on the list.
The recognition of both Forest Creek courses within Golfweek's top 100 residential course poll completed a sweep, of sorts, of the magazine's rankings for the private club located just minutes from the village of Pinehurst. Earlier in the year, the North Course had been named as the sixth best new course in the country, making it the highest ranked new course in the Southeast.
Both courses were named to Golfweek's 2006 list of top 100 modern courses, making Forest Creek the only private club in America with two courses ranked in that elite list.
The Forest Creek courses are among three Fazio has designed for Greenville, S.C.-based developer N. Barton Tuck Jr. Last summer, Bright's Creek Golf Club, a Tuck development located in Mill Spring, very near Fazio's hometown of Hendersonville, opened its first course. Another Fazio design is already planned for the property.
"We are very proud of the golf we have at Forest Creek," Tuck said. "Tom Fazio is the best when it comes to bringing out the beauty of any property, and he certainly did that here.
"He's also one of the best when it comes to giving the high handicapper a chance without destroying the challenge for the good player. Every designer wants to do that, but it's the hardest thing in golf to do, and it's something that Tom does very well.
"To have both courses at Forest Creek ranked within the top 30 in the country is certainly an honor. I think the rankings speak to the quality of the golf Tom designed in creating two distinctive courses, as well as the overall quality of the club experience at Forest Creek."
In announcing the 2006 residential course rankings, Golfweek's Bradley S. Klein wrote, "I like golf courses that make you feel like you're somewhere special. At Golfweek, when it comes to course ratings, we have a simple term that helps us appraise the value of that experience with the land. We call it 'a walk in the park.'
"You wouldn't normally associate an enjoyable 'walk in the park' with real estate golf. But that's precisely what distinguishes the list. This, after all, is a collection of those very special layouts that managed to make for a comfortable residential community without compromising the quality of golf. And they do so while allowing players to feel like they are in a special place of nature."
Both the North and South Courses at Forest Creek play to a par of 72 and feature five sets of tees. The original South Course measures 7,067 yards from the championship tees, 5,047 yards from the most forward markers. The North can measure from 5,170 to 7,139 yards.
