The Sandhills Quilters Guild was recently host to watercolor artist and quilt instructor Judy Lilly from Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Lilly presented a trunk show of her work during the meeting and an afternoon workshop on making a "Mountain Landscape Wall Quilt." The workshop was continued the following day.
During the trunk show, she discussed color theory and showed several quilts to exhibit visually the use of the color wheel.
Lilly went on to show several quilts of the same design to show how the use of color can give a totally different visual effect. She also discussed many and sundry visual experiences that might inspire use of color in quilters' work, and especially the importance of the light, medium and dark values.
The guild welcomed guests Judy Medlin and Jordan Johnson to the meeting.
Other business of the meeting included the announcement that the quilt-related auction held recently raised money that was split evenly and donated to the local food bank and the Coalition.
The Outreach Committee reported a December deadline for quilts for the guild's Habitat quilt grant.
Judy Swearingen and Betty Wardle won the "Block of the Month."
Each month, member Linda James presents a lesson on a specific block. Those members who wish to participate follow the directions and color directives to create one block (or more) and turn the blocks in the next month. One or two names of participants are drawn, and they take home enough blocks to make a small quilt.
Next month's workshop will be led by members Marlene Mills, Judy Rosinkski, and Betty Wardle. They will give instruction for quilts using a flip-and-sew method. Many members plan to hand their products in as service quilts.
The Sandhills Quilters Guild continues to plan "Quilting in the Pines," co-sponsored by the Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department to be held in the Fair Barn Oct. 13 and 14.
Deadline for entering quilts is Sept. 15. Contact Pat Andrews, quilt registrar, at 910-693-9912 or e-mail: pandrews26@earthlink. net.
The Sandhills Quilters guild meets monthly at 9:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month, at Brownson Memorial Presbyt-erian Church in Southern Pines. Guests are welcome to attend a meeting.
