A second-half goal by Todd Gingerich was the difference in the Union Pines boys' soccer win at Lee County on Wednesday evening.

Teammate Dalton Hadlock delivered a diagonal over-the-top ball that Gingerich ran onto and powered high into the net to make it 2-1.

Now 2-0, the Vikings took a 1-0 first-half lead on a goal by Hadlock off a pass from Va Cha. The Jackets tied the match early in the second half.

In the preliminary contest, The Union Pines JV team opened the season with a 2-0 win against the Jackets. David Cha and Stephen Golden scored the goals.

Union Pines tennis

Union Pines defeated visiting Southern Lee 9-0 in girls' tennis Wednesday.

The Vikings, now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Cape Fear Valley Conference, have yet to drop a set this season.

Natasha Whetzel won at No. 3 singles and teamed up with Katie Kelly to provide the Vikings a win at No. 1 doubles to run her career record at the school to 68-10. She is 36th on the school's all-time win list.

The Vikes are scheduled to take on Gray's Creek on Monday in a conference matchup.

O'Neal volleyball

The O'Neal volleyball team had to dig deep for a 15-25, 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 15-6 home victory over Fayetteville Academy on Wednesday evening.

The Falcons evened their record at 1-1 by prevailing in the tie-breaker game. They open Triad Athletic Confeence play with a 5:15 p.m. match at Westchester Country Day in High Point this afternoon.

"The girls deserved the win," O'Neal coach Brandy Diveley said. "They fought hard and never gave up."

Cate Dahl led the Falcons in serves with 22. Kenleigh Cameron put together a strong all-round game that included 14 service points and seven kills.

Melody Miller served for 11 points and Leah Kelly was the kill leader with 10.
