The Pinecrest volleyball team opened the season by splitting a pair of non-conference matches.

The Patriots defeated Western Harnett in Lillington on Monday, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-22. On Tuesday they were swept at home 26-24, 25-15 and 27-25 by Terry Sanford.

The Pinecrest jayvee team evened its record at 1-1 by defeating Terry Sanford 25-16 and 25-13 on Tuesday.

Both Patriot squads travel to Lee County on Thursday.

North Moore soccer

Carlos Avila scored two first half goals Tuesday as the North Moore boy's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a 3-1 victory at West Davidson.

The home team scored first before Avila tied the game with an assist by Antonio Bernal. After Avila's second tally, a goal by Joaquin Diaz off a pass from Bernardo Cruz completed the scoring.

The Mustangs complete a busy first week with a 6:30 p.m. home match against Central Davidson on Thursday.

Pinecrest tennis

Tuesday's scheduled home girl's tennis match between Pinecrest and Scotland was postponed because of rains. The Patriots travel to Richmond County for a 4:30 p.m. match on Thursday.

North Moore volleyball

The North Moore volleyball team started its season with a three-game sweep over South Davidson on Tuesday.

The Mustangs posted 25-18, 25-6 and 28-26 wins over their Yadkin Valley Conference foes.

Coach Alana Pennington was pleased with the way her team played in their season opener. She mentioned several factors in the win, including the outstanding play of Logan Monroe and Brittany Harper. Hollie Brady provided strong defense on the back row. The net was attacked with force by Megan McNeill, Casey Smith, Carrie Smith and Elyssa Vest. Jessica Phillips led the way with service aces, while Brandi Chandler led the way with setting assists.

The next match is at home against Chatham Central on Thursday.
