Kelly joined 21 other Vikings in the school's 100-win club. She picked up a win at No. 2 singles and teamed with Natasha Whetzel to get a win at No. 1 doubles. Her record at the school is now 100-12.

"She has joined a special category," said veteran Viking coach John Frye. "She is a very fine player. This is my 25th year as the coach of the girls, so she is joining a select club. She was last year's conference singles champion."

Kelly was 37-1 combined in singles and doubles last season.

As for the Vikings, they rolled through last season with a perfect mark in conference play, and didn't lose a match until the state quarterfinals on their way to an overall 17-1 mark. The Vikings lost a close 5-4 decision to Burlington Williams in the state playoffs.

Union Pines finished 14-0 in conference play last season. Overhills is a Cape Fear Valley Conference foe of the Vikings.

"It was a good match," Frye said. "It was a good way to start. Overhills has improved since last year."

Union Pines rolled through the top four singles eight-game pro sets without dropping a game. Included in that outburst was the play of freshman Neena Wanko, who made her debut at No. 1 singles with an 8-0 win over Devin Kinkead.

Wanko is currently ranked No. 6 in the state in girls 14s and No. 22 in the Southern Sectional.

She is the sister of Danica Wanko, a two-time conference champion who graduated last year.

Joining Wanko and Kelly with 8-0 singles wins were Lydia Stalls at No. 3 and Maura Lenahan at No. 4 singles.

The Vikings will face a non-conference rival in Southern Lee today in a home match that starts at 4 p.m.
