Driver Ashley Nichole Winkley, 19, of Whispering Pines and Dominique Osmand Gray, 18, of Southern Pines were driving a 2001 Acura on Georgia Highway 196 when a truck traveling on intersecting Highway 17 struck their vehicle.
The Georgia State Highway Patrol said that the investigation into the accident is not complete but that the driver of the logging truck and a witness both said that Winkley and Gray ran a stop sign.
The truck driver, Michael Dewayne Jackson, 34, was headed south on Highway 17 in Hinesville, which is southwest of Savannah. The Acura was traveling east on Highway 196.
Though Winkley and Gray were wearing seat belts they both died on the scene.
The two were traveling to Moore County after a trip to Florida.
Winkley had moved to Whispering Pines in the last few months from Baltimore, Md.
Gray graduated last year from The O'Neal School and was going to N.C. A&T State University. He had worked at Forest Creek Golf Club for several years.
