It was the first time the team had made it to the Southern Sectionals where they would face off against teams from a nine-state region.

Although the local squad failed to bring home a sectional championship to go along with their state crown, Susie Campbell, one of the members of the team, thought the experience was a good one.

"We had a good time," Campbell said. "We had some tough matches against some good teams. We won some, and we lost some. This was the first time this team had made it to the sectionals. We're going to try and go back next year."

The team, led by captain Kate Petsolt, rolled through the regular season with a 9-1 mark, then added several more wins in claiming the state crown. In the state tournament held in the Pinehurst area, the women defeated teams from Greensboro, Charlotte and Wilmington.

Carol Ray, Petsolt, Cindy Mohan, Tove Doolittle, Tina Fasolak and Patty Zoellner played doubles for the Lawn and Tennis team, while Tammy Bryant and Toni Davenport played singles. Andrea Bracamonte played singles in one of the matches. They finally picked up the state championship with a nail-biting win that was decided by tiebreakers.

Other members of the team included Campbell and Patty Fisher.

Three other teams from the Lawn and Tennis Club competed in the state championships. The men's 4.0 and 4.5 teams, and the women's 4.0 team were the other squads entered in state competition.
