Tennis Tourney Produces Winners

In one of the most competitive tournaments in recent years, the Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department tied with the Moore County Parks and Recreation Department with five champions each. Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department produced one champion and four flight runners-up.
Daniel Hall of the Pinehurst team won the championship flight to claim the overall honor as summer champion. He defeated Tony Huntley of Southern Pines in a tough match. Hall fought back after losing a first-set tiebreaker to win 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-0.
Other Pinehurst flight winners included Will Tucker, Gray Hamilton, Catherine Cox and Dustin Kavanaugh.
Tucker topped Will Fondrie of the Moore County team and Jordan Cummings of Southern Pines to claim the first flight championship.
In the fourth flight, Hamilton defeated Alex Nieves of Pinehurst and Jay O'Connor of Moore County.
Cox claimed the eighth flight with wins over Anna Maness of Moore County and Brook McLeon of Pinehurst.
Kavanaugh defeated Melissa Talley of Moore County to win the ninth flight.
Moore County recreation champions were Josh Bryant, Jake Waits, Jay Stalls, Kendra Black and Samantha Marsh.
Bryant won the second flight by defeating Willie DeGroot of Southern Pines and Dan Tucker of Pinehurst.
Waits claimed the third flight with wins over Todd Hudson of Southern Pines and Will Harris of Pinehurst.
Stalls won the fifth flight by defeating Andrew Jones of Southern Pines and David Hopkins of Southern Pines.
Black got her championship in the seventh flight with wins over Lydia Stalls of Moore County and Sarah Cox of Pinehurst.
Marsh won the 10th flight by defeating Crawford Liner of Pinehurst and Jordan Holland of Southern Pines.
Sam Middleton of the Southern Pines team won the sixth flight by defeating Maura Lenahan of Moore County and Caroline Cox of Pinehurst.
A total of 40 competitors entered the singles competition. Southern Pines Recreation and Parks served as the host of the tournament, providing complimentary registration fees, pizza and trophies, while the Sandhills Tennis Association donated tennis balls.
The coaches of the three teams served as site directors. Pinehurst assistant and Methodist College men's coach Eddie Luck directed play at Pinecrest High School.
Pinecrest High coach Gail Deese directed play at Southern Pines, while Jordan Gray directed play at Southern Middle School.
Brandon Marsh directed the tournament play at Memorial Park courts in Southern Pines.
Robert Reeve was tournament coordinator and John Frye was the overall tournament director.
