Hi DoubleHeroides....actually all parts of speech, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, composition, and punctuation are taught in the middle and northern parts of Moore County. I recently retired from the school system in the upper end of the county, and so I know this is true. My sister just retired from teaching English at North Moore for more than 30 years. I assure you, no student escaped her class without being well informed about these same things. We have many students of various backgrounds in our schools in all areas of our county. I believe their teachers, for the most part, try to do the best for them. Sadly, even though I think cursive writing can be a beautiful way to express ourselves, it's not really that relevant in today's classrooms.

and when you finish embarrassing your children, then you can embarrass your grandchildren.

My granddaughter's favorite comment is "Granny...stop... you're not COOL!" Wow....but I used to be!

I've never been much of an outdoor person, but a couple of years ago I took my granddaughter kayaking on Bear creek. My participation was leisurely, but my granddaughter was of course more energetic and paddled kayak and canoe. It was a beautiful September day, and all who participated had fun. The McDuffie's provided the kayaks and canoes and some fundamental instruction. It's a nice memory of a shared activity for me and my granddaughter and is a sport you can enjoy at a variety of participation levels. I highly recommend it.

Wow...I agree with the letter writer, and I agree that if you don't like it don't read it. Wonder what that means?

Well, I thought we were finished with this but I guess not huh? The question remains "Should religious leaders, including the Pope, be given sacred cow status?" That is, should no one ever question their motives or actions? As I interpreted the article, the Pope was not slandered or defamed but shown to be human just like the rest of us. It also seems to me that the new Pope Francis I wants this for himself and has lived it for the past many years. I wish him well in this endeavor. I hope he can continue to do it. I'll say it again, the people who were most upset with Jesus weren't the irreverent ones; they were the ones who considered themselves to be perfect.

Why won't a southern Baptist commit adultery standing up?

Because somebody might think they're dancing!

I only know one joke about Islamic extremists, and I can't remember exactly how it goes. The jist of it is that when the extremists get to heaven there are 70 Virginians waiting for them instead of 70 virgins. Anybody know this one?

If you want to see a good movie about how the Pope is picked, watch "We Have A Pope." You can rent it on Amazon Instant Video. It shows in detail how the Pope is chosen and has some very funny moments also.

I'm not saying that Dusty is in any way in the same class as Jesus......but Jesus did use satire in his teachings also. The story of the Good Samaritan as well as many other parables used satire and irony to make the point that church leaders and high officials weren't doing as they were supposed to or even as their own laws taught. The story tells of the priest and the Levite who walked to the other side of the road rather than contaminate themselves by helping an injured man. Then, how ironic...a Samaritan....despised by Jews as unclean half breeds....came to the aid of this Jewish victim. Yes, the man who fell among thieves was a Jew.....someone his own clergy and leader avoided helping. Now you know that these stories got Jesus into a lot of trouble. Jesus knew that the leaders of the Jews in his day needed to hear things that were true even if it got him in trouble. The Parable of The Good Samaritan is my all time favorite.
