It seems you have missed a serious contender, the Nook HD/HD+ from Barnses & Noble. Their pricing, features and specs are quite competitive, and, with a "jaunt" to the Fayetteville store (or Raleigh-Durham or Charlotte) you can get hands/eyes on one - beats the heck out of mail-order gamble of Kindle at least. Plus the Nooks are one of the few contenders that can take micro SD cards for much cheaper storage increases than paying the ridiculous price jumps for Kindle and iPad storage increments.
