Mymindwanders, don't waste your time with DR. He is showing why lawyers have the rep that they do. He's not worth getting angry over. Most people can see what he is and just ignore him. Unfortunately, the Pilot has chosen a bad seed to represent their paper. Maybe they just like the drama.

I did animal rescue in Texas for six years and saw about anything you can see concerning cruelity to dogs. I saw dogs chained in a yard with no water, no shade in 100+ temperatures and their chains wrapped around a tree so they couldn't even lie down. I saw dogs with mange so severe that they had no hair and almost no skin left on their bodies and had to be euthanized. I rehabed a few with milder mange problems that took six months to treat. With all my exposure, I still am sickened by the way some people treat their pets. Pets may not be human, but they are family members and should be treated with the kind of care and diligence that any other family member would be shown. If a person can't love, care for, show attention to and cherish their canine family members, then they have no business owning them. There should be leash laws (for the protection of the dog), but I don't believe any dog should be chained and basically ignored in someone's backyard. They are social animals and need us humans as much as we want them. They can feel pain, sadness, grief, jealousy and love just like we do.

Yukonjohn, sounds a little paranoid to me. How many people have gangs of people break into their homes in this country. I think that some people (especially men) have what I call the "John Wayne" syndrome that it makes them feel "tough" to own big guns. Similar to why some folks want the big rugged type trucks or the fancy sports cars. If people feel they need guns, fine, but no one needs a military style high power gun capable of shooting multiple rounds to protect their homes. I truly hope that the day does not come that you will face those 12.

Well, skylinefirepest, why do we need military style weapons? If guns are needed solely to protect ourselves and our families, why would anyone need an AK47? If you say we should have guns that are normally issued to the military and police, should we also be able to purchase tanks, cannons, military style figher jets, etc.? Since the military and police need these types of weapons for their work, it is entirely a different situation. They are highly trained in their use. As you well know, people need to be regulated in what they do because unfortunately many people are not responsible. A perfect example is the mother of the man that murdered the children at Sandy Hook. She had numerous guns that were apparently accessible to her mentally disturbed son. She must have known he had problems, but still kept dangerous weapons in her house. Please tell me for what possible purpose do you feel you/anyone need guns that are capable of killing multiple people as in CT?

Finally, a letter of reason and common sense. How can anyone expect something that was passed over 200 years ago to be automatically applicable now? It is absurd. It is horrifying that an organization like the NRA can control the government with little concern for the wellbeing of the country. No group should have that much control. I want and expect my government to do what is in the best interest of the people of this country. Isn't that what we elect them to do? Are we just suppose to throw up our hands and say "oh, well?" If people want guns to "defend" themselves then they certainly can do so without having the semi-automatic military guns and ammunition that they can now have. No one except the military and police need that kind of fire power. That is just common sense. What is the next thing people will "demand?" Tanks to drive and cannons for their front yards???

You have to go through driver's training, take a written and driving test to drive a vehicle (which can be a deadly weapon), you have to take months of training and log many hours to get a pilot's license, but people can go to a gun show and buy a gun. No training needed. A deadly weapon but easy to obtain and use. I also would love someone to explain to me why anyone (besides military and police) need the high powered military style guns. I can understand hunting rifles for use by hunters and small handguns for protection, but who needs an AK47 or these other high powered weapons. I think many want these guns simply for ego reasons. No one can convince me that there is any reason for these type of guns being available to the general public.

Bless the Sawyer family for knowing the true value of our furry family members. They are a true blessing!

FugitiveGuy, what I mean is that some seem to believe that we need to be as it was in the old west where everyone had a gun and that any disagreements or arguments were settled with guns. If we as a society at this time arm all our citizenry, then disagreements may well be settled with guns. If you check the newspapers, you will see where the NRA is stating that the way to deal with the situation is for everyone to be armed. I find it so disturbing that some seem to actually believe that the answer is for every citizen to carry a gun. We have enough trouble with uncivility in our society today. I cannot imagine what would transpire if everyone is carrying and someone does something someone else doesn't like. How about people that are intoxicated and armed. It is a frightening scenario.

Apparently some wish to return to the days of the OK Corral. Some places are allowing people to carry guns into churches. My, God, what next? Are we going to arm our men of the cloth so they can teach God's word and then pull out a gun and blow someone away if someone enters the church threatening. There has always been and always will be a "crowd mentality" as when one person decides to loot and then others follow suite. What will happen if everyone is carrying a gun and something happens and everyone starts shooting. There will be no time to decide who is going to "take care" of the situation. I just cannot believe the mentality of the NRA to think that to remedy the situation is the arm everyone. Why in the world would any regular citizen that is not military or police need any kind of military or assault weapon? We already are being called a gun crazy society by other countries and we have more guns than any other country on earth. I have said for years and believe that the movies, music and video games have contributed to a generation that has become numb to violence. When will common sense be the practice of the day and not so much everyone's RIGHTS that put our society in peril.

My biggest question is for what reason does anyone need the kinds of guns that are being sold to the public? For what purpose does the ordinary citizen need military style guns and guns that can shoot multiple rounds. I am not an expert on guns as I am totally anti-gun and have had virtually no exposure and have no desire to do so, but have seen documentaries of the type of guns being sold at gun shows and it is horrifying to me. What person needs that kind of gun power? I feel that the only kind of guns that should be available (if any) to the general public are basic rifles that are used in hunting. IF it is necessary (which I am not an advocate of hunting), than I believe that should be the only guns available except to the military and police. It is very apparent that people cannot be responsible and if something isn't done, no one will be safe anywhere. England has baned gun ownership and we should do likewise.
