Last month, the Thomas Fordham Institute released a study comparing state standards to the new Common Core Standards. The authors gave North Carolina's language arts standards a D; the Common Core Standards (along with Tennessee) earned an A-. Likewise, the authors gave North Carolina's math standards a D; the Common Core Standards (along with Georgia) earned an A-. Only five states have lower language arts standards than North Carolina; only six states have lower math standards than North Carolina. http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2010/07/21/37fordham.h29.html

In addition, the Locke Foundation has found that "on the 2008-09 North Carolina end-of-grade and end-of-course tests, the average charter school performance composite (percentage of 'proficient' students across grades and tested subjects) was 73.0 percent, compared with 69.8 percent for district schools." http://www.johnlocke.org/agenda2010/agenda2010_web.pdf
