There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. People who don't love their dogs let them run free. I know they will tell you they DO love their dogs, but to risk the split second it takes for a four legger to take off after something, a squirrel, another dog or even a small child is not worth it. Not to mention getting hit by a car or lost. Check out the lost and found pets section of this paper. It can break your heart. The same goes for those who let their cats roam free. We have hawks, bald eagles, bob cats, great horned owls, coyotes, fox, you name it, all ready to make a meal out of Fido and Garfield, not to mention the killing of helpless small animals, birds and other wildlife by our "domesticated" furry friends. Too lazy to take care of an indoor cat? Don't get a cat! Our pets depend on us to make the right choices for their well being and a lot of people, especially in NC, fail that trust miserably.

Great post OldPilot! Perfectly said.

Like housing prices aren't low enough around here. This kind of front page news will surely attract the well heeled and those looking for a "safe" place to move their families to this area, don't cha' think? NOT! The big sign is the perfect addition. Unbelievable! It should say "Kooks, Dumbs and Nuts, shouldn't roam free."

@thelastword, take your abortion rant and go away. When you start adopting and caring for the babies you want to force to be born, then you can come back and post your outrage. When you donate your time and money to the unwanted children who are abused, starved, beaten and abandoned, then you can post your outrage. You "Have the baby and the rest is your problem" fools, give me a pain. Who are the sheep? Look in the mirror. You condemn, yet take no responsibility for your opinion that forces others to have unwanted children.

Mr. Rowerdink, Really? The "king" thing? How about after years of "in your face obstructionism" it's no more Mr. Nice Guy? How about one after the other of embarrassing false moves of the house, i.e. Mitch McConnell filibustering his own bill, not having enough votes of their own party to even present a bill on the fiscal cliff, the insidious Norquist pledge, etc. LOL! Congress passed the bills that caused the spending, now you don't want to pay them? Did you ever run a business? Did you ever buy a car? Do you pay your bills? Well, America has to pay their bills. It wasn't Obama who threatened default, it was the house who said it would be a good idea. We are still paying for the war that continues for the past 12+ years, it has cost us trillions. The house has been posturing and chest pounding, first to guarantee Boehner his reelection to his position in the house and second, to look good to their voters for 2014 and the dastardly Tea Baggers who have more influence on the GOP in the house than they should. Would you work with a bunch of 3 year olds who constantly put their party before the people? Who can blame Obama for finally standing up to them? The house and the GOP approval rate has fallen drastically and continues to free fall. That doesn't look to me like the rest of the country is behind them. I think you have the description of the "disgusting attitude" in the wrong place. If the house and the GOP continue on the path they are on now, by 2016, there won't be any GOP to reach across the aisle to! Unless your party is willing to accept change, it will eventually fade away, along with what is left of the angry old white men like yourself.

Mr. Barnes, your silly letter doesn't even deserve a reply. The weak, car thing, etc. is so lame. Why don't you run over the "terrorist" with your car then? How would you know they were a "terrorist"? What paranoia! If this is the level of intelligence supporting the resistance against any type of gun control, no wonder most are considered nut cases. I guess you approve of the NRA ad using the children of the President as fodder for more of their panic provoking propaganda. Too bad Obama asked for armed guards for the schools, BEFORE the stupid ad hit the air waves, making the NRA look even worse than usual. As for your last line, the word "think" is obviously alien to you. Maybe you should stop and "think" before you write this kind of ridiculous letter to the editor.

Sigh.............That's what happens when the GOP fox guards the henhouse. Why am I not surprised? And they said the previous administration was wrought with criminal intent. This new one will surpass Perdure's questionable time in office, tenfold. Better get those hamsters on wheels hooked up to your home's wiring. This is eventually gonna hurt big time!

Great column as usual Dusty, you hit all the nails on the head! Some of the most notorious infectious sources of SWORS is Faux News, Rush Limbaugh and the NRA. Too bad we don't have a vaccine to prevent SWORS. Once caught it is fatal to rational thinking. Keep typing and ignore the griping!

@buforsplay, What planet do you live on? ............."They don't want to protect the children in the schools because that would actually curb these mass killings and that would hamper their efforts.".........

First of all, the President has recommended that there be armed guards in schools, where have you been? Didn't it fit your crazy agenda? Your post is a perfect example of what is so terribly wrong with the mind set of those who spew hate and insanity on this subject. Anyone who would actually believes what you posted is not of sound mind and should not own weapons. How sad for you to go through life with the kind of paranoia and irrationality you displayed in your comment. You do no good for your cause. With friends like you, who needs enemies? Any sensible gun owner would recoil at your comments and distance themselves as far as possible from your kind of sick thinking.

As for David Gray, an excellent letter. Too bad it draws some out from under their rocks like buforsplay.

......."They understand far better than the administration and the talking heads why the founders included the Second Amendment to the Constitution."..........

To paraphrase, they understand NOTHING. They twist the words of the 2nd. amendment to fit their agenda and have no idea what it actually stands for. They fail to realize no one is going to take their guns away. The result? Look at the gun rally this past Saturday. I thought the officials attending were going to explain the 2nd. amendment to those who attended, to calm their misplaced anxieties, to remove the paranoia and fear they base their outrage on. Too bad that was not the case, instead they chose to join the far right media and the NRA and continue to whip the weak minded into even more of a fearful frenzy. How embarrassing for those pictured with their knee jerk outrage and misinformation on display for all to see. What did they accomplish? They made the gun shop owners richer, the gun manufacturers richer and emptied their pockets of thousands of dollars for expensive weapons they don't need. They gave all law abiding, sensible gun owners a black eye. Just who do these people fear? Who are the "they" that are always brought up? Are "they" the nice young man with his lovely wife and newborn daughter who serves at Fort Bragg and just moved in down the street? Are "they" the polite gentleman who also just moved in with his 4 little boys who also serves at Fort Bragg, who helps his older neighbors with their yard work? Do these people actually believe that the black helicopters will come and the government will storm their homes and confiscate their weapons, then enslave them? What incredible nonsense! People who actually believe these kind of conspiracy theories really shouldn't own weapons, they are not rational or responsible. A gun owner's rights are NOT being taken away, but their sanity and reasoning are being negatively impacted by false propaganda. What a slap in the face at the tragedy in Connecticut! I can only hope that the increase of gun sales does not result in an increase in gun deaths by accident. We lost enough innocent lives at Sandy Hook.

It always astounds me when I read once again, another righteous opinion that women should not be allowed to make their legal choice for the termination of their pregnancy. Those who decry the loss of the "babies murdered" never discuss the fact that it is usually embryos removed not full term viable children. The person responsible for the condemnation is usually using their religion of choice as their sword to strike down the rights of others. The disgraceful aspects of these constantly arrogant soap box orators is that they offer no recourse to address the resulting unwanted children they insist be born.

I would suggest Mr. Jacobs purchase a van and enlarge his home. Since he is so adamant about "saving" 53 million children, he will need incredible resources and all of his time to round up those considering abortion, to take them into his home to assist them in the care and health care costs required for their pregnancies and to eventually adopt and raise the resulting children. Does Mr. Jacob volunteer at abortion facilities to counsel those considering the procedure? Does he donate a substantial portion of his income to support unwanted, abused, starved, beaten and abandoned children? I would bet the answer would be NO.

How easy it is to sit upon that high holy horse and direct your judgement at women who must make serious and hard decisions affecting their entire lives. How easy it is to sit on the side lines and want to force your beliefs on strangers, then turn you back on them after the fact. You proponents of "have the baby and the rest is your problem", make my stomach turn. What arrogance, what righteousness, what utter stupidity.
