@blessherheart: The article says: Barber said the bus had activated its flashing lights and was slowing to a stop. It had yet to deploy its stop sign.

So that means the flashing yellow lights were on, which are just a caution light; the flashing red lights and stop sign were not yet on, so legally the other vehicles don't have to stop yet.

Here's another issue - the 2005 Energy Policy Act changed the 'fall back' DST time from the last weekend in Oct to the first weekend on Nov, starting in 2007.

If we had already 'fallen back" it would have been one hour later, with more visibility at 6:40 am this past Wednesday and maybe the driver would have seen the boy.

I still say the meetings should be broadcast on the Community Access Channel on Time-Warner cable.

Fayetteville City Council broadcasts their meetings, why not here?

Um...capitalism? free market? profit motive? charging what the market will bear? lower cost of living in SC?

Or would you prefer price gouging? oil company conspiracy?

How about televising the meetings and broadcasting over the Community Interest channel on Time-Warner cable, just like they do with the Fayetteville city council meetings?

?? It wasn't on the front page of my print edition. It was on page C-4 in the Scene section, with the other wedding announcements. The front page article and color picture was the story about the BackPack Pals food bank.

Although the color photo of the happy couple shown here looks much better than the black & white one in my paper.

Are there different editions for different parts of the county? Or maybe they caught the mistake part way through the print run.

Actually, the M-198 howitzers pictured in the article have all been replaced in the Marines and the Army by the M-777 howitzer. These come in at about $2 mil apiece.

I believe that the state statute, GS 105-164.13, exempts gasoline from local sales taxes. So the variation in price among counties cannot be attributed to the different sales tax rates in the counties.

Maybe there is a perception by the gas station owners that Moore County is home to a bunch of rich retired Yankees who can afford to pay a higher price, but the price difference cannot be attributed to the difference in county sales tax rates.

For what it's worth, at $0.35 per gallon, North Carolina has one of the highest state gas tax rates in the country, and the highest in the southeast.

NC state law says that North Carolina has a use tax on out-of-state purchases. The use tax applies to purchases made outside the State for use inside the State. Individuals in North Carolina are responsible for paying use tax on their out-of-state purchases. Out-of-state retailers include mail-order companies, television shopping networks, firms selling over the internet, and retailers located outside North Carolina. When an out-of-state retailer does not collect sales tax, the responsibility of paying the tax falls on the purchaser.

Line 19 on the NC state income tax return is titled "Consumer Use Tax", this is where each taxpayer declares the amount of sales tax he owes, based on taxable income, or actual records of purchases.

Detailed instructions for computing the amount of sales tax owed are included with the tax form.

All loyal North Carolinians should be sure to make this entry in their tax return, to help fund the necessary state programs and protect our local retailers.
