Obama Needs Some Lessons
Colin, leave the man alone. At least as long as he keeps his hands in his pockets he won't be able to reach into my pocket.

Friends, Family Mourn Loss of West End Teen
I cannot fathom how this family feels at the loss of their child. You have my prayers for the peace that only God can bring. In one of my jobs I worked at putting a program together that might make an impact on teen drivers. After a fatal crash in Randolph County where the passenger survived, I approached a Board of Education member and suggested a teen to teen program might deliver the message of driver responsiblity and highway safety to young drivers. My suggestion was to have a crash survivor make a presentation at a neighboring high school. The presenter would be surrounded by representatives of the first responders - EMS, NCSHP, local LEOs, local hospital ER staff and yes perhaps a local undertaker as support for the presenter. I was stunned by the immediate response I received, "Give the kid's two weeks and they will have forgotten about it and gone on with their lives." Simply unbelievable. So my challenge to Moore County educators, let's see if you can't do something aside from bringing grief counselors to the high school after a tragedy. Let us be proactive to save all of our kids from a tragedy like this. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with this family.

Oh, Canada!
Roy, You could have gone north on US1 to Tramway yesterday and found regular at both BP stations selling for $3.549 per gallon. So why is ours still at or over $3.70 per gallon around here? Good question.

Unfair Speed Trap
TODA, Since this post was started by a school professional let's do the math with your posting. Say one hundred yards is the distance between traffic signals in Aberdeen. One hundred yards equals 300'. The only two locations that might even be close to that are US 15/501/NC 211 South at US 1 to US 1 at NC 5 and US 1 at US 15/501/NC 211 North at Johnson Street. The rest of the distances between signals is well over 100 yards - oh that would be a football field.
I've had some issues with Aberdeen PD over the years, none over being stopped. One was an APD Officer stopped southbound on US 1 at US 15/501/NC 211 North while the vehicle in front of him made an illegal left turn. No action taken. When I stopped him on Poplar Street near Main Street he said there was no sign. Not true. The other issue involved an officer leaving his patrol car stopped in the northbound left turn lane for Magnolia Street during school arrival time for Southern Middle School. This not only blocked all parents and school buses from making a left turn with a green arrow, it made the arrow display and delay release of southbound US 1 traffic. His mess backed up beyond the driveway to Harris Teeter. Oh yeah, he and another APD Officer were having a social moment in the Robert's Golf driveway some time after pushing a stalled pick up pulling a small boat trailer off the highway. When the problem was pointed out to him, he indignantly asked if I knew how hard it was to cross US 1 as a pedestrian. Told him yes I did and that I knew it was lots easier with a uniform, a badge, a bullet and a blue light.
The school pro should face the full consequences of our traffic laws, period.

'Help' Romney Didn't Need
Ah rusty Dusty. You should have stopped at your first statement, "I really wasn’t going to do another column about Mitt Romney this week." Its ok with me that you didn't stop, I did and I'm not going back, as Paul Harvey would say, "... for the rest of the story."
Outta here ....

Pinehurst Council to Look at Residential Speed Limits
What is scary to me is politicians setting speed limits. If everyone would just drive the number that is posted the problem would go away. A reasonable speed limit should result in 85% or more of the motorists voluntarily complying with it. An unreasonable, politically set speed limit, will result in substantially less voluntary compliance. And while we are at it, let's get the politicians to do away with the no tickets unless you are 9+ over the posted. Let's also get the politicians to force the courts (I know, that's an oxymoronic statement) to stop converting moving violations into non-moving violations or worse yet PJC's (Prayer for judgement continued). Being successful at that would produce a better result than some phony speed limit set by a group of politicians. Nuff' said.
