$150,000 for 2 weeks? Really, people, don't be so greedy. Even though price gouging is typical for this area, if you're not careful, people may choose to stay somewhere other than Moore County, or maybe not to even bother coming.
Mr Price, just because Tom Crosby said it, doesn't mean he's responsible for it! It sounds like you're appealing to him to change the gas prices, but there is nothing he can do about it, he was just speaking the truth about the reason for price gouging. Despite the many non-rich working class here it is still considered a tourist area, and prices are higher in tourist areas no matter where you go. I agree with the folks who say to stop paying the prices here. My husband works outside of Moore County, so when my car is low on gas, we trade vehicles for a day so he can fill mine at a cheaper price. If you don't want to drive far for cheaper gas, the prices are more reasonable at the gas stations on 211 going towards Hoke County, and I think down in Pinebluff.
I don't know if any one of these can be "the best", the five or so I've tried are all very good and different from one another. Depends on the mood for what type of treat one wants!
No offense Andrew, but you sound like you haven't ever lived anywhere but here. Try living in or even near a border town for some perspective on illegal immigration. I guarantee it would change your point of view on many of your unsupported arguments.
Your argument about businesses having a right to hire whoever they want is a bit flawed, it is against the law to hire illegals. Uncle Sam wants his percent of everyone's pay, illegals get paid under the table and don't pay taxes. There are also issues with many employers who do hire them paying substandard wages, subjecting them to unfair labor practices, and unsafe working conditions. We have labor laws for a reason, and unscrupulous employers will try to bypass those laws with this demographic because they can get away with it. Illegals often have no recourse when treated unfairly, they won't go to authorities for fear of getting caught and deported. Most live in poverty and don't go shopping for clothes and cars, it's all they can do to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, and many still try to send money to family over the border. However, they still have access to schools, government programs, and healthcare, so it's preferrable to living in their country where the government doesn't help them.
I do agree with your "welfare state" assessment, the government needs to put more restrictions on welfare and stop spending. Some tighter oversight to help prevent fraud would save lots too.
Agree with getreal and wish I could put my words as tactfully. I have never liked beauty pageants because I feel they demean women and prevent them from being taken seriously by reinforcing certain stereotypes. I've never understood why a mother would want to set her daughter up to be objectified by entering them into contests based on their looks. I'll leave my opinion at that because I don't want to sound like I'm putting down the girls who are the subject of the article, but I hope someday they understand what true sacrifice is and how silly and shallow it sounds to make references to giving up fun things as a sacrifice.
I agree with you animalluvr. I am so sorry for what you and the other family members are going through and for your losses. I can't even imagine the pain you all feel, and I hope some day everyone who was affected by this can somehow find peace. I don't think this could have been predicted or avoided, and I think it could have happened anywhere. That said, the way I see to try prevent something like this from happening again is to make improvements to mental health care which has suffered many budget cuts, and improve upon the laws that are supposed to protect victimized women instead of locking down residences for the elderly.
I think before I agree or disagree with this executive order, I'd like to know how many children of illegals go on to graduate and become productive members of society vs how many go on to be burdens on society with crime and/or welfare.
Just a suggestion, maybe since part of the clubs service mission includes eyeglasses and vision testing, why not send invitation flyers to the local optometry/opthamology offices, and ask them if they will display in their offices for everyone. Maybe it's already been done, but if not, it seems that these folks would have more of an interest in helping the community in this area.
Hoping this young man is okay and returns safely to his family and friends. Just curious, where is Deep River Park? I find a few locations in NC when I google it. I know it was mentioned that there was an aerial search, but has there been a search on foot? He may have gotten injured on a trail somewhere.
