I share your dislike for the landslide of money into politics, especialyl into PAC's where contributions can't be traced because of shell companies. Nonetheless, we need additional supply supply in order to become energy independent. Energy independence will keep us from having to dabble in Mideast politics.
I'll attach a link to this post which shows spot prices, Henry Hub, where most natural gas prices are set for consumers. You'll note that prices spiked at approximately $13.25/MCF (June, 2008). Prices have dropped drastically since then to $2.39/MCF. You'll also note that the drop in natural gas prices corresponds to the ongoing economic crisis and by extension, falling demand in a poor economic climate as opposed to supply. IF we are able to convert our energy usage to more clean burning natural gas, mainly by powering our autos on gas or LNG, demand will increase and we will need additional supply in order to keep prices low. Additionally, you and I probably share the opinion that coal as a source of energy has had a significant negative impact on the NC environmen (acid rain from our neighbors in TN). Even with the advent of better scrubbers for emissions, it still has a negative impact. I believe that natural gas is our cleanest source of fossil fuel and will have to carry us for potentially several decades until we can find a non fossil fuel solution. I also believe that the technology exists currently to negate the risks to the environment in NC and elsewhere. As such, I am all for fracking in NC.
Great column. You should have added the following:
The above economists were influenced by the Austrian School, mainly Hayek, who was on the faculty at UofC, though not in the econ department;
Schultz; Dean of Uof C's B-School was influenced strongly by another UofC faculty member anda giant in Moneterist/free market theory, Milton Friedman;
The administrationalso included other UofC lumaries such as Beryl Sprikel who served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors (MBA/PhD, UofC). Sprinkel was also the architect of the plan to stabilize the markets during the stock market crash of 1987; and
Finally, Arthur Laffer, author of the Laffer Curve, was a Hayek and free market influenced economist. He was also a tenured professor of economics at UofC and main architect of supply-side economics. Laffer served as a member of Reagan Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board (1981–89).
As the above demonstrates, The Chicago Scool dominated economic thought during one of the longest post-war expansions during our nation's history. We need to return to free markets and moneterist thinking as opposed to the failed Keynsian economic policies.BTW, having lunch in UofC's faculty dining room is one of the most awe inspiring experiences in my life!
What do you suggest I run the generator on??? Natural gas of propane (LNG). If the gas comes from NC, gladly. Always hacking on the special interest such as business being behind everything. No one ever speeaks about special interests such as the Sierra Club, AFSCME, George Soros and othe political left leaning elites (like George Kaiser) who gain special favors ??? By the way, being knowledgable about Kaiser's financial position, he has been LONG natural gas for years (in OTC swaps and futures) and says he will always be so. What is his special interest??? Probably restricted access to new natural gas supplies in the market. BTW, he was one of Obama's main contributors and a shareholder in Solyndra. Guess its who's ox is being gored.
I live in Pinehurst and find SP a refreshing diversion from the up tight folks who want to keep the village center as is( which means absolutely nothing to do). I enjoy going to Cup of Flow Coffee and taking my dog. I enjoy dropping by River Traders and other stores. Broad St. is a great downtown. I like the Bohemian feel if the SP folks don't mind me saying so.
I don't say this often to you Steve; you wrote a good column.
Sanity returns to NC. When we have Pat McCrory as governor and not some hack politician like Bev Perdue, we can finally start moving this state forward. Good old Bev can veto now but it will be signed into law in 2013.
All you alarmist tree hugging liberals should just sit back, relax and take a swig of your Perrier.
FWM, appreciate you giving me the last words as they contain logic and FACTS
Let's take it one by one:
If you want to call me a mysogynist, please just say so;
Your comment is like saying; you can go to the Louvre but you can only look at the Mona Lisa and not other paintings by Monet and Van Gogh;
What sets an event is the quality of the champions (none have been terribly impressive lately) and the quality of the field. The event would still retain its lustre if only one match was played on No. 2. The tournament will not if it continues not attracting top ranked talent. You can continue to cling to the No. 2 aura all you want. That alone will not make a great championship;
I don't care, and I'm sure Pinehurst wouldn't if the N&S played all its rounds on #3 if it could attract top 50 ranked amateurs and former US Am/Mid Am and Publinx champions. Would the Masters be the same if most of the field was ranked from 100-200? The answer is simple...No. The National alone would not be the attraction without a strong field every year and a continued list of great champions. Same goes for #2;and
You clearly have a phobia like many in this community that Pinehurst Resort and the Deadmans are trying to cheat the membership and are money-grubbing owners. You clearly have it in for them no matter which facts I throw at you....You can only continue going into the corner yelling No. 2, No. 2 until you turn blue in the face.
Golf courses don't make championships, champions make championships and as such, until we start attracting great champions, the N&S will continue to suffer. Pinehurst has recognized this reality and is making appropriate changes to make the N&S better in the years to come.
Buggy whips, transister radios and rotary dial phones have gone the way of the dinasaur and it doesn't make life the lesser. Same goes for the old format of the N&S.
Golf courses don't make champiopionships, champions make championships
