With the number of mass shootings in the past decade, I'm amazed that a study conducted in 2002 (MAYBE Columbine was included in this study) is considered relevant. Weapons have changed, modes of communication have changed (meaning fugitive guy, that point #10 may no longer be accurate), preparedness has changed. If I'm not mistaken, it was an officer that brought an end to the shooting at a local nursing home. It was police presence that led Friday's shooter to take his own life. I don't think many will agree to a call to arm grade school teachers.

The goings on at Richmond county hospital is "local" news? Or perhaps because some patients likely came to Pinehurst you consider this local news? Should the paper report all patient transfers in? Or perhaps you consider this "local" news because it has something to do with First Health. Should the paper immediately cover all events that occur on each of the First Health campuses?

I suspect most Moore county residents would prefer to see Moore county news in the Sunday paper that something tangentially related to Moore county.

"They said the downtown post office . . . is the main magnet that draws residents to the village center."

What a stretch. It might be the one "establishment" that all residents utilize, but I doubt that moving postal operations will negatively impact retail operations. Either I'm going out to lunch or shop or I'm not. I don't shop simply because I have a letter to mail.

So is being "Most Conservative" (or "Most Liberal") something to be proud of? I don't know. My first thought on hearing such titles is this is a person who may well have a problem negotiating, compromising.

That said, I do appreciate an "act frugally with other people's money" philosophy.

emb6683: I don't know that the light of day would have made any difference. If you see flashing yellow school bus lights (quite easy against a dark sky) don't you assume there are probably children nearby about to be picked up by the bus? To me that is just a logical conclusion - I don't need to actually see a child.

Not trying to blame the driver here. Mom, according to the story, said the driver came around a corner so this is possibly just a dangerous pick-up spot given the speed limit.

"Why has the principal gone to the hospital, she needs to stay away and out of the way and let the doctors and the family handle this."

Don't you just love it when individuals presume to be some sort of "appropriate behavior authority"?

Apparently neither of you have respect for "the system" unless "the system" delivers the results you want/deem appropriate. And while you may believe the death penalty is less expensive, it seldom is. Do a little research into the costs associated with death penalty cases - it's an eye-opener

The man received a sentence of 120 - 175 years. How is that a system failure?
