The entire Tufts park idea and moving the parking lot is a total inside deal. The park and the downtown landscape were done by a council member and his pal and they will hear of nothing else. There is only support for this ridiculous plan from the small group of power players in this little berb. Most citizens when they understand what is going on are flat out against it. Debbie is right; we do not need it and do not want it. What a way to blow a million dollars of taxpayer's money on something we do not need. When is this town going to wake up to the monumental waste of money going on?
Quote "and we will always be known for the superb golf architecture of Donald Ross." I suppose since Ross lived in Pinehurst for many years that could be sort of true (although somewhat of a stretch). The reality is that Pinehurst may have at most 18 golf holes that are Donald Ross designed. Almost all the others have a different designer or have been so grossly changed over the years that they bear no resemblance to a Ross design. In fact Southern Pines has more Donald Ross golf holes with Southern Pines CC (Elks Club), Mid-Pines, and Pine Needles. But then no one should dismiss the power of advertising and telling the same incorrect statement over and over again.
The statement "my belief has always been that the qualities that prompted our Historic Landmark designation can never be lost or destroyed" says much when you think about it.
I would prefer that the elected officials and employees of the town focus on providing quality municipal services and keeping the taxes low rather than searching out brewerys and bars so they can spend another $300,000 to build a parking lot for a pub. They have no business being involved in this and the taxpayers and voters should stand up and tell them so.
This building (if renovated) would have made a great location for a new library. The village would have had their dream of enhancing the area, the new road they proposed would have an anchor "business" that is a bit more upscale than a bar and the old library could be converted into a welcome center / museum / public rest rooms. They would have no problems with the Landmark issue, they could probably get grant money for renovating an historic structure and citizens going to that location would not compete with other visitors to the downtown for the few parking spaces. The old steam plant would also have room for their proposed meeting / cultural center which would have also greatly enhanced that part of town. I guess that would require the powers that be to think outside the box.
And so the village has spent countless hours and probably a lot of taxpayer’s money promoting a business that had no chance of moving (and staying in business after it moved) just to once again try to advance their "vision" for a particular plot of land. Now they are once again spending more taxpayer's money on a consultant to tell them what do with "new core". Does anyone remember long strategic plans put together just in the past few years that went over this very same ground? Why can't the village council stick to running an efficient government, providing high quality municipal services and keeping the taxes down? Why are they obsessed with trying to change everything and leave their stamp all over the village? Wait till you see the disaster they plan to implement in the center of the village. When will the citizens wake up?
These projects were cooked up in a back room and everyone knows it. The taxpayers in Pinehurst are being taken to the cleaners by consultants and the pet projects of a few on the Village Council. When they are done little will be left.
Good God!! Will you people just give it up and let's start having real adult conversations on how to improve education, infrastructure, fiscal oversight, real tax reform, improving our medical system, etc., etc., etc.
Why can't you all just get off your silly high horses and grow up?
