Purnell Swett Holds Off Pinecrest
@ donj
What is this "Metzger Kool Aid" that you find so funny?
Ever since coach Metzger arrived at Pinecrest, football has set the school's standard of excellence.
Unfortunately for us loyal fans, with the football teams newfound success, some of the traditionally smaller (and less successful) programs at Pinecrest yearned for a piece of the action. Seeing the football team go from zero wins back in the pre-Metzger era, to 6-0 at the start of the year, some of pinecrest's non-football-playing student athletes cried out. They wanted an equitable portion of athletic resources.
The great man that he is, Coach Metzger was more than happy to bring the school together and share football's growing assets. Soccer, tennis, basketball, and cross-country players began attending football class (which has since been renamed Pinecrest Cross-Fit ), academically struggling members of the debate team were invited to attend football-sponsored after school tutoring sessions, and the orchestra, band, and chorus are each flying to California this winter to compete in a nationally recognized music competition.
Needless to say, Coach Metzger turned negative, jealous energies into some truly wonderful activities. However, in his rush to help out Pinecrest's needy programs, Metzger may have inadvertantly slowed his own teams progress.
Our injury-riddled season and lack of available players is a direct consequence of too little time spent in the weight room. Obviously our coaching staff emphasizes the importance of lifting, but ever since the initiation of Cross-Fit, it has become increasingly difficult for our football players to get a proper workout. Less time in the weight room = more injuries
Secondly, the more I think about it, Pinecrest's expulsion from playoffs was almost an inevitability this season. Consistently applying their off-the-field knowledge at after-school tutoring sessions, our assistant coaches spent too little time blowing whistles at football practice. As a result, our players lacked the necessary discipline during the UP game, and the rest is history.
Lastly, with the amount of money the football boosters have "dedicated to the arts" the coaching staff understood that this year's team would struggle to find that extra edge. In the off-season, we had the option to acquire slow-motion film machines, a new weight room, and send the entire coaching staff to a 2-week training camp. However, in the spirit of giving back to the students (who support the team with such pride), the football powers decided to allocate the funds towards our growing arts department.
The moral of the story: Metzger cares more about the holistic wellbeing of Pinecrest than his own teams success. Although this year's schedule included a few padded games, the goal was to improve the lives of all Pinecrest students.
For all his work around the school and in the community, I applaud Coach Metzger.
Go Patriots!!!

Football Fight Brings Stiff Penalties
This is an absolute outrage.
Coach Metzger has done too much for Pinecrest High School and for our community, to receive such criticism.
First, @ Flactem and the other pundits who claim that Coach Metzger is classless: You have clearly not seen Coach Metzger’s new focus on the classroom
Just instituted this year, every football player is required to take at least one arts-based elective. Orchestra, band, chorus, debate, creative-writing, and drawing have soared to new heights with Pinecrest’s champions joining their ranks.
Furthermore, the pass/fail football class has been completely abolished. In past years, football players and parents cried-out about in-class boredom, dry course-catalogs and general academic disengagement – The case was made to end football class.
Every month, Closed-door discussions centered on the pressing issue. On one side, the majority called-for an end to football class. Yet, a stingy minority held firm that coach-led word-of-the day sessions were more than enough intellectual-stimulation for one class-period. Fortunately, some newly-arrived football coaches voiced their discontent last month, and the debate screeched to an end: Football class is no more
Secondly,
With the grand pool of resources that Pinecrest athletics have accumulated over the past four years, other athletic and academic programs have exploded to life. Long suffering from cracked courts and tattered windscreens, Pinecrest’s tennis courts are scheduled for resurfacing just this year. The Nationally competitive debate program is expanding its sizeable travel budget, and the soccer program is building a brand new complex.
–All thanks to the Football program.
*With particular reference to last Friday’s controversial incident: Some critics have suggested that Metzger went too far with the score in last Friday’s game. These lost souls simply fail to realize the importance of success: Without football victories, tickets go unsold, and all of Pinecrest’s stellar clubs and activities lose funding.
Thus, with the score tight at 47-7 and Union Pines looking ready for a comeback, the important tactical decision was made: Protect the lead with a 2 point conversion, and weather the impending onslaught.
Clearly some third party is to blame for Pinecrest Football’s state playoff ban. First they tampered with the official game camera, rendering Pinecrest’s film unreadable. Then, with the help of some video experts, they managed to doctor their own cell-phone-video and send it to the NCHSAA.
It’s a strange world,
Good Luck Pinecrest!

PHS Coaching Carousel Is a Win-Win
@ member. Right On! Over the past four years, Pinecrest Football players have banished the “big-dumb jerk” stereotype. New assistant coaches have arrived with highly specific goals in mind, and our student-athletes are reaping the benefits. True, some coaches are recruited solely for their football expertise, but many more join Pinecrest to share their love of learning. As a matter of fact, just this year, every football player is being required to take at least one arts-based elective. Orchestra, band, chorus, debate, creative-writing, and drawing will soar to new heights as Pinecrest’s champions join their ranks. Furthermore, the pass/fail football class is being completely abolished. Fortunately, the newly-arrived football coaches voiced their discontent last month, and the debate screeched to an end: Football class will be no more. Clearly Gabanga is off-base. Football success at Pinecrest is not holding back our future math-majors. In fact, the complete opposite is true: With hefty financial resources, a progress-oriented school system, and a Great Head Coach, anything is possible.

Parziale Earns D1 Tennis Scholarship
I Completely agree with craze0044. Pinecrest continues to prepare our student athletes for the next level both mentally and physically. Regardless of the sport or activity, Pinecrest Students are challenged to excel.
The school is truly becoming the backbone of the community. The football program had its best season in decades, the soccer team made it to the playoffs again, basketball had a great regular season, baseball is near the lead of the state rankings, the lacrosse team is having an amazing first season, and the tennis team is top of the conference (And that's just the mens teams!!!!)
Congratulations to Dana - his hard work and dedication have paid off, and the Pinecrest learning environment has prepared him for so much more.
Younger students should look to Dana and Pinecrest's other leaders as role models for the future.
It's A Great Day To Be A PATRIOT!!!
